General

Wow, I did it! I wrote a new post in less than two years! Just about 1 year to be exact.

Yep, that is pretty much it. I couldn’t miss the opportunity to use that title.

I’ve had a few ideas for things to post about over the last year and I never just sat down and posted any of them. I currently have three other drafts that I started, and more ideas in my personal notes that I haven’t started writing here yet.

It turns out that has been weighing on me and has incurred a real cost on my mental energy, just maintaining the idea of doing something but not actually doing it. I thought that the only cost was just remembering from time to time and then feeling down on myself for not doing it, or telling myself I didn’t have the time to do it. But it turns out the cost of not acting has been higher than I thought.

Check out this awesome video about closing the loop to regain energy. IIt played a role in motivating me to finally post this.

Besides the opportunity cost of not growing my blog for the last five years and becoming better known online (good for business), I haven’t been organizing my thoughts as well because I haven’t been writing them down into coherent posts to share. I haven’t been helping others that might benefit from what I have learned. I haven’t been practicing how to just do and make perfect later.

Two of the other three drafts I have started are also based on the premise that they were the first post in a long time. One of the two is literally just part of the draft for my very first post that I cut in half because I thought it was too long. Yes, that means that draft is 3 years old!

Well, it is time to change that. Instead of feeling blocked waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect idea, or time to polish the idea perfectly, I’m going to just start posting. Maybe I’ll find better ways to say what I meant to say, but that is what the comment section is for, and I can always create follow up posts. Life isn’t perfect. We live and we learn. But we don’t learn nearly as much from just thinking about what we can do. We learn from doing and trying and seeing what works and what doesn’t. And what works for some doesn’t work for others, so we can’t just blindly follow the advice other people give us either.

What’s this, I made a video about taking advice and put it on YouTube? When did I start doing that?! About a month ago? Woah! And I’ve made 16 videos already? Double woah! I can’t believe I’m actually doing the things I’ve thought about for years and never started. Oh, that is what this whole post is kinda about, isn’t it? Go and do the things you’ve been thinking about for a long time. Maybe I should jump back to the normal body of text and start talking about that now and stop whispering…

Yes, as I just whispered about, this post is really about just getting started on whatever it is you’ve been thinking about doing and just doing it. Even if you feel like you are too old, you’ve waited too long, or you’ve missed the boat, just try it. You won’t know if you’ve missed the boat until you’ve run to the dock. And even then you may be able to swim out to it or get a charter boat to catch up. They’ll take more hard work (early mornings) or money (paying someone to help you catch up), but it is probably still possible.

You won’t know if you don’t try. And if you don’t try, you definitely won’t arrive.

So whatever it is you are thinking about, just get started. Find the smallest action you can take and take it. Write a single short post. Put it somewhere people can see it. There are many platforms you can use like WordPress sites (like this one) or like Substack (oh, yeah, maybe I should start posting there… hmm…).

Then keep it up. Keep doing small things and let those small changes compound over time into big results. It is more important to be consistent than it is to do something big. I’d highly recommend reading Atomic Habits by James Clear to learn more about making those small changes. (affiliate link) It has been great reading it together with my wife every night.

Well, I guess that is it for today. Go, do, become.

See you next time!
